Becoming a Category Leader
We spent last night attending a benefit function hosted by Miami Living magazine at the Ritz Carlton in Miami Beach. The benefit was attended by many local celebrities, politicians, and a who’s-who crowd … great for our brand networking. Generally such events help to add to an already-impressive roladex full of potential magazine contributors, business contacts, celebrities, hoteliers, etc…
Tonights event took a surprise turn as I learned I was nominated for one of Miami’s "50 Savviest Singles" (whatever that might mean). I’m sure I am in good company, so I accepted the nomination with a smile. Certainly the worst case scenario would be newspaper mention, and the upside might be great. I was certainly intrigued at how many attendees were asking detailed questions of myself and our key staff members at the event… where are the next elements? club openings? International development… who is the next "All-Star" Board member? Our online magazine is a strong consumer hit, already thousdands of subscribers ahead of projections… our staff is hard at work on the next issue, which will be unveiling in several weeks. You cannot help to be both flattered and excited after a night like this, realizing that only 2 years ago, not a single person in that room knew of our brand, and now we are becoming the clear category leader in women’s lifestyle and fitness.
